For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. 1 CORINTHIANS 14:2(AMPC)

 There is no relationship with the Holy Spirit without prayer. You cannot develop and cultivate a relationship with the Holy Spirit without prayer. Speaking in tongues is a language of communicating with God that not even the angels understand. There is no governorship of the spirit without praying in the spirit. Speaking in tongues is the communication of spirits and as long as you are using only your mind to pray you are terribly limited.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 1 CORITHIANS 14:14-15(NKJV)

The vocabulary that addresses all your needs in prayer is limited if you pray only with words. There are Words in English that will not really communicate what you want to say. In the realm of the spirit, there are things our spirit wants to talk to God about, but we don’t have Words to express them. When you pray in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit gives you vocabulary beyond your mind, so you can talk to God in the way the Spirit can be understood, and we can say exactly what we want to say to God beyond our mind. The utterance of the spirit is already in your spirit, you pick up that utterance by faith.

But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1 JOHN 2:27(NKJV)

A believer is not just a person who has received the life of God but someone who has been mandated to reveal the glory of God
