STEPS TO COMMAND GOD’S UNDIVIDED ATTENTION PART 4

 Psalm 145:18–19

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.”

Proverbs 15:8

“The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.”

 Isaiah 66:2

“For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”

 Mark 11:24

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

5. Psalm 141:2

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”

DEVOTIONAL

There is a difference between merely going through the motions of prayer and approaching God with a heart that is fully engaged. God is not impressed by empty religious activities or the length of our prayers; He desires sincerity, faith, reverence, and a heart that genuinely seeks Him.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God responds to people who approach Him with humility and sincerity. Hannah poured out her soul before the Lord. David continually sought God’s presence. Daniel maintained his commitment to prayer even when doing so became dangerous. Their examples remind us that a meaningful relationship with God requires consistency, devotion, and a willingness to honour Him above competing priorities.

God’s attention is not something we purchase or manipulate. Through Jesus Christ, we have the privilege of approaching the Father in faith. Our responsibility is to cultivate a heart that honours Him and a life that reflects genuine fellowship with Him.

Here are four more steps to deepen your prayer life and strengthen your walk with God.

1. PRAY WITH A SINCERE HEART

Jeremiah 29:13 reveals the importance of seeking God with the whole heart. Psalm 145:18 assures us that the Lord is near to those who call upon Him in truth.

God desires genuine fellowship, not empty religious performance. When you pray, be honest before Him. Bring your fears, needs, struggles, gratitude, and desires to Him without pretending to be someone you are not.

Sincerity means approaching God with an undivided heart, willing to receive His correction and direction. Do not allow prayer to become a routine in which your lips are moving while your heart is far away.

Memorable Truth: God desires your heart, not merely your words.

2. APPROACH GOD WITH A HUMBLE AND CONTRITE SPIRIT

Isaiah 66:2 reveals that God looks with favour upon the humble and contrite person who reverences His Word. James 4:6 reminds us that God gives grace to the humble but resists the proud.

Humility acknowledges that you need God. A contrite spirit remains teachable, repentant, and responsive to His Word. Pride resists correction, but humility welcomes God’s wisdom and direction.

Never allow your achievements, spiritual experience, position, or accomplishments to make you feel independent of God. The more you grow in your walk with Him, the more you should recognize your need for His grace.

Memorable Truth: The heart that bows before God remains ready to receive His grace.

3. PRAY ACCORDING TO GOD’S WILL

First John 5:14–15 teaches that we have confidence when we ask according to God’s will. John 15:7 connects abiding in Christ and allowing His words to abide in us with asking and receiving.

Effective prayer is not simply about asking for what you want; it is about bringing your desires into alignment with God’s will. As you study Scripture and grow in fellowship with Him, you learn to distinguish between personal impulses and requests that reflect His purposes.

Praying according to God’s will does not mean you cannot express your personal desires. It means trusting His wisdom enough to surrender your requests to His perfect knowledge and timing. Ask boldly, believe sincerely, and remain submitted to His will.

Memorable Truth: The closer your heart aligns with God’s Word, the clearer your prayers become.

4. MAKE PRAYER YOUR FIRST RESPONSE, NOT YOUR LAST RESORT

Philippians 4:6–7 teaches believers to present their requests to God with thanksgiving and promises God’s peace to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Daniel 6:10 shows Daniel maintaining his regular practice of prayer even when he faced serious opposition.

Many people turn to prayer only after every other option has failed. However, a life of fellowship with God makes prayer a first response to life’s opportunities, decisions, pressures, and challenges.

Daniel’s consistency was not built in a crisis; it was established before the crisis arrived.

Develop the habit of consulting God before making decisions, thanking Him before celebrating victories, and seeking His strength before confronting difficulties. Do not wait until life becomes overwhelming before you seek His presence.

Memorable Truth: Build a life of prayer before you face a season of pressure.

DAILY APPLICATION

1. Spend time in sincere, undistracted prayer.

2. Ask God to reveal any attitude that needs correction.

3. Identify a current request and examine it in the light of Scripture.

4. Make prayer your first response to today’s decisions and challenges.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Father, give me a sincere heart that seeks You wholeheartedly. Deliver me from pride, empty religious activity, and self-dependence. Teach me to pray according to Your will and to trust Your wisdom above my own understanding. Establish me in a consistent life of prayer so that I seek You in every season, not only when I face difficulties. Let my fellowship with You become deeper, stronger, and more fruitful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

FAITH CONFESSION

I seek God with a sincere and undivided heart. I walk in humility, honour His Word, and align my prayers with His will. Prayer is my first response, not my last resort. I approach my Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ with faith, reverence, and confidence in His goodness. My relationship with God grows deeper every day, and my life brings glory to His name. Amen.
