The Compassionate Heart

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. MATTHEW 9:36(NKJV)

Love is selfless, which is characterized in the Bible as a willingness to give up one’s own wishes for those of others. True love will always adapt and adjust to the needs and desires of other people. It’s not possible for people who’ve truly been reduced to love to be selfish. God has taught them how to be totally adaptable and adjustable to others. Love is adjusting our own needs and desires in order to help meet the needs of others.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 1 JOHN 3:16(NIV)

Sometimes instead of us adjusting to others, we expect everyone else to adjust to us and our needs. Our ability to adapt and adjust to the needs and desires of others is the true spirit of compassion. Selfishness is unwillingness to bend one own wish to accommodate someone else’s timetable. Compassion is the heartfelt desire to meet the needs of others first before your own.

Prayer of the Day: Father in the name of Jesus, I humbly come before You, seeking to cultivate compassionate hearts within me. May Your love flow through me, softening my spirits and opening my eyes to the suffering of others. Grant me the grace to act with kindness and understanding, reflecting your mercy in my words and deeds. Help me to be vessels of Your compassion in a world that so desperately needs it.
