The Price for Increase (A Teachable Spirit)

“Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” Proverbs 9:9 (NIV)

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning and let the discerning get guidance.” Proverbs 1:5 (NIV)

“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.” James 1:21 (NIV)

One of the most powerful postures a believer can take is that of humility and teachability. God promotes the humble (James 4:10), but He resists the proud. The person who is teachable is positioned for growth, favor, and fruitfulness. In a world full of opinions and ego, a teachable spirit is a rare but powerful trait that God honors. A teachable spirit is rooted in humility. Teachability begins with acknowledging, “I don’t know everything.” Proverbs 3:7 – “Do not be wise in your own eyes…” A humble heart invites wisdom. Pride blocks it. Jesus consistently taught those who were hungry to learn (the disciples) but rebuked those who thought they already knew it all (the Pharisees). Everyone desires increase—spiritually, financially, relationally, and in influence. But many ignore one of the most critical keys to increase: a teachable spirit. Teachability is the heart’s posture that says, “I don’t know everything. I want to grow. I’m open to learn.” Teachability is the willingness and humility to learn, be corrected, and apply what is taught. Here are key attitudes of teachable people: 1. Hunger for truth – They want to grow. 2. Humility – They don’t think they know it all. 3. Honor for mentors – They listen and value input. 4. Application – They act on what they’ve learned.

“A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” Proverbs 1:5(NIV)

A teachable spirit attracts wisdom and counsel. Proverbs 15:22 – “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. A teachable heart absorbs wisdom and avoids painful mistakes. Proverbs 13:18 – “Poverty and shame will come to him who disdains correction, but he who regards a rebuke will be honored.” A teachable spirit leads to increase in favor. Even Jesus submitted to learning and authority. His teachability led to favor. Luke 2:52 – “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” A teachable spirit leads to increase in relationships. God often sends answers through people. If we cannot receive instruction or correction, we limit our increase. People are drawn to those who listen well and grow. Stubbornness repels, but teachability invites connection and trust. A teachable spirit is an invitation to increase in influence and promotion. Proverbs 15:31 – “The ear that hears the rebukes of life will abide among the wise.” Psalm 25:9 – “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.” God can work with someone who is willing to be taught—He can elevate them, entrust them with more, and expand their influence. A Biblical Example was Joseph in Egypt – He remained humble and teachable through slavery and prison, and God elevated him to a position of great authority.

Teachability prepares you and brings leadership opportunities, and also greater responsibility. If you can be taught, you can be trusted. God increases capacity and responsibility based on our responsiveness to His guidance. Luke 16:10 – “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…”  Every situation can teach you something if your heart is open. Unteachability leads to stagnation, pride, and destruction Proverbs 26:12 – “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” King Rehoboam refused wise counsel and lost the kingdom (1 Kings 12). Teachability produces spiritual and material increase. Proverbs 13:18 (NIV) – “Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.” Teachability leads to honor, influence, and even material blessing. Why? Because the teachable keep growing. To cultivate a teachable spirit, you must; 1. Stay close to God’s Word – Let Scripture correct and guide you. 2. Surround yourself with mentors – Learn from others’ wisdom. 3. Ask questions – Be a lifelong learner. 4. Receive correction well – See it as a blessing, not a threat. 5. Pray for a soft heart – Ezekiel 36:26 – “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.”

God Honors the Teachable and teachability is the pathway to growth, influence, and increase. When God sees a teachable heart, He can entrust more. God is looking for those He can develop, not just use. A teachable spirit opens the door to divine revelation, favor with others, and lasting fruit. If you want to see increase in your life—spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and materially—embrace a posture of teachability. James 1:21 – “Receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” Learn from mentors, feedback, and even from failure.

Our Call to Action: Ask God to soften your heart. Invite the Holy Spirit to correct and instruct you. Seek counsel from godly people. Keep learning—never stop growing.

Prayer of the Day: Father in the name of Jesus, I ask that you give me the heart that is humble and teachable, and a mind that is open to Your correction and instruction.  Remove pride and stubbornness from me. Help me to value and walk in your wisdom, to grow daily, and to receive instruction from Your Word and from those You send into our lives. I declare that I receive increase—spiritually, in wisdom, in favor, and in purpose.  Amen.”
