“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” JAMES 1:25(NIV)
It’s easy to obey the parts of Scripture we like—but James challenges us to obey all of it. Psalm 119:160 says “The sum of Your word is truth. Many are guilty of selective obedience. The early church didn’t just preach sermons—they lived them. They Loved their enemies, shared their possessions, forgave quickly and rejected worldly lifestyles. Their obedience to Jesus’ teachings turned the Roman world upside down. We want God’s blessings—but not His commands. We want His protection—but not His correction. We want His promises—but ignore His principles. Luke 6:46 – says “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say?” Partial obedience is still disobedience.
Hearing without doing leads to, spiritual numbness, religious pride, Judgmental attitudes and lack of fruit. Think of Pharaoh—he heard God’s word repeatedly through Moses but hardened his heart. Eventually, judgment followed. Unapplied truth becomes a spiritual toxin. When we obey God’s Word, it produces fruit. Obedience is tested when it’s inconvenient, when it costs something, when others don’t understand and when you feel like quitting. Faith is proven not in comfort, but in crisis. Obeying God in the storm shows the depth of your faith. You don’t need to understand the whole Bible to begin obeying it. What has God told you to do that you have delayed or ignored? Are you obeying Him in both public and private? Are you using the Word to examine others—or to examine yourself? What area of your life needs immediate obedience? What’s one command you can act on today? The more we hear the Word without responding to it, the harder our hearts become. Hebrews 3:15 – “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” Let’s be doers—not debaters.
Prayer of the Day: Father in the name of Jesus, I receive the grace to be a doer, not just a hearer. Give me the courage to obey even when it’s hard, the humility to admit where I have failed, and the strength to keep walking in Your ways. Amen.”
