How to Refuse Anxiety

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Anxiety is that inner turmoil, that feeling of dread or unease, often about things that haven’t even happened yet. It’s rooted in fear—fear of the unknown, fear of lack, fear of failure. Jesus spoke directly to this in Matthew 6:25-27: “Do not worry about your life… Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Anxiety can’t add anything to our lives, but it can certainly steal from them—our peace, our sleep, our joy.

Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything…“That’s not a harsh command—it’s a gentle invitation. God is saying: “You don’t have to carry this. Bring it to Me.” How do we do that? By prayer – We talk to God honestly about what’s weighing us down. With thanksgiving – Even in the middle of worry, we remember what God has done before. Gratitude shifts our focus. Through petition – We ask God specifically for help. He cares about the details. Verse 7 says:” And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” This peace isn’t based on whether your problems are solved. It’s God’s presence calming your soul, even in the storm. That word “guard” is a military term. God’s peace stands like a soldier, protecting your heart and mind from being overtaken by fear.

Practical Steps to Overcome Anxiety

Name Your Anxiety – Write it down. Speak it in prayer. Get it out of the shadows. Focus on God’s Promises – Read Scriptures like Isaiah 41:10, 1 Peter 5:7, and Matthew 11:28-30. Meditate on His character—He is faithful, present, and powerful.  Be Grateful Daily – Anxiety shrinks when we focus on what we already have in Christ. Stay Connected to Community – Don’t isolate. We need each other—sometimes just sharing your burden lifts half the weight. Keep Bringing It Back to God – Anxiety might return—but so can your prayers. Keep laying it at His feet.

Prayer of the Day: Father in the name of Jesus, thank You that You are with me. I bring my worries to You now. Remind me of Your faithfulness, fill my mind with truth, and guard my heart with Your peace. Help me to trust You in every circumstance. Amen.
